Anatomy of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
The nerves of the brachial plexus pass between the anterior and middle scalene muscles as they travel towards the shoulder and arm. A stretch, tear or chronic spasm in a scalene muscle can occur in a whiplash injury or in a variety of other situations. This can cause pain and weakness in the arm and hand as the nerves are squeezed by the injured muscle.
